Holmes Highlights: Megan Rigali, Kindergarten Teacher

Holmes Highlights is a regular feature where we get to know members of our Holmes Community a little better.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in River Forest, right next to Willard Elementary School… How could I not become a teacher?

Where did you live before you came to Holmes?

Before working at Holmes, I spent four lovely years in Oxford, Ohio getting my Undergrad at Miami University…Love and Honor!

Can you tell us a bit about your family?

I have one brother, who is two years younger than me! He currently lives in Charleston, and works for Serta Mattress Company… we have lots of oversized sheep in our house! You can find my Dad and my dog Rocco running around town, and my mom runs Team Millennium, a swim team in the community!

What is something that makes you happy?

Trying out new activities!  For Mothers day and Fathers day, my family has made a point to test out new activities in the Chicago land area! It started off with biking the lakeshore path, and Segway tours, and since then we have been Trapped In a Room with a Zombin, indoor sky dived, and taken a Trapeze and Archery class!  Something’s we have enjoyed more than others!

What do you consider a great personal achievement?

Three years ago I signed up for my first international distance triathlon, and had never run more than 3 miles.  After successfully completing the triathlon, I was hooked! This past year I completed my first Chicago Marathon! Although I didn’t win… I had a ton of fun!

What is the trait you most frown upon in yourself?

I try to get too many things done in a short amount of time, which is a nice way of saying that I  am always running a little behind!

What was your favorite classes in high school?

It’s silly, but I really loved taking Foods and Nutrition in High School. It gave me hope that I wouldn’t live on mac and cheese, cookie dough, and hummus for the rest of my life!

What is your motto?

“If you can’t think of anything nice to say, you’re not thinking hard enough.”

–      Kid President

What was one extra-curricular activity you did that might (or might not) surprise people?

I played water polo in High School, and College! Now I’m on an “old lady” water polo team- where I try to keep my head above water!

If you won a trip to anywhere in the world, where would you choose to go?

I’m lucky enough to be taking that trip this summer! I’m going to Iceland for a few days on my way to Paris!  I do have my eyes set on Thailand next!

What is your greatest extravagance?

I have a Children’s book buying obsession! I am frequently looking at what new books are being released on Amazon, and scholastic to see which books I can add to our classroom library!  One of my students last year, told her parents that, “Ms. Rigali spends all her money on books!”
