Holmes Highlights is a regular feature where we get to know members of our Holmes Community a little better. This week we are highlighting Shannon Saliny, Kindergarten Teacher at Holmes Elementary. Where did you grow up? In Oak Park, IL!
If you hadn't gone into education, what's another career you might have considered? Being a food critic doesn't sound too bad and it paris two things I love: food and writing!
Can you tell us a bit about your family? My parents, Sue and Steve, are the most wonderful and giving people I know. I am the youngest of 4 and have two sisters and one brother. One of my sisters is a special education teacher at Irving Elementary. I am also the proud aunt of my 7 year old niece, Ashlyn.
What is something that makes you happy? Little things that make me happy are: coffee, books, music, walking and laughing. Big things that make me happy are my family, my friends, my students, helping others, and vacations!
What is the trait you most frown upon in yourself? I am the worst procrastinator! This is the trait I'd most like to change about myself.
What is something that you treasure? I treasure my friendships. I am surrounded by interesting, caring and wonderful friends. Some of my friendships are going on 30 years!
What was your favorite subject in high school? English and History.
What was one extra-curricular activity you did that might (or might not) surprise people? I was lucky enough to be part of a great youth group in high school and I am currently an advisor for the group now.
If you won a trip to anywhere in the world, where would you choose to go? Hands down, I'd go to Switzerland and soak up the views, eat chocolate, and relax.
What is your motto? Be gentle with yourself. We are our harshest critics and everyone can benefit by being kinder to themselves.
