Holmes Highlights: Principal Christine Zelaya

Holmes Highlights is a regular feature where we get to know members of our Holmes Community a little better.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Chicago - Lincoln Park. I went to Alcott School for Elementary and Lane Tech for High School - Go Lane Go!

Where did you live (or work) before you came to Holmes?

I live in Hoffman Estates with my family. I started my career in Education teaching at Falconer Elementary. When I left there I was their Tech Coordinator. From Falconer, I was assistant principal in Elk Grove at Rupley Elementary. After Rupley, I was principal of Sycamore Trails in Bartlett. Most recently, I was Director of Curriculum and Instruction in Glencoe. I am so happy to be back in a school setting with students and teachers.

If you hadnt gone into education, whats another career you might have considered?

My fantasy job would be in forensics or in the FBI.

Can you tell us a bit about your family?

I've been married to my husband Juan for 25 years. Our oldest son Julian in 24, Sebastian 19, and Lily is 17.

What is something that makes you happy?

I love helping others achieve their goals. It's so exciting to see people achieve something they didn't think they could achieve.

What is something that upsets you?

Giving up before you ever start. Doesn't necessarily upset me, but makes me sad.

What is your greatest extravagance?

My cleaning lady - I love her and will never give her up.

What do you consider a great personal achievement?

I have 2 - completing my first triathlon and my doctorate.

What is something that you treasure?

My family and friends!

Do you have any pet peeves?

The first one that comes to mind is coming home and finding a sink full of dishes.

What is your motto?

I have 2 that I like to use often. Go slow to go fast and we can only be where we are today. I really feel they both embody my belief in continuous improvement.

What was your favorite subject in high school?

In High School I loved my science classes. Biology and Chemistry - not physics.

What was one extra-curricular activity you did that might (or might not) surprise people?

I am a triathlete - love the personal challenge!

If you won a trip to anywhere in the world, where would you choose to go?

I have a lot of places on my bucket list - but I really want to go to Greece. My moms side of my family is from Sparta. I'd love to travel all over Greece to see all the history and beauty first hand.
