Holmes Highlights is a regular feature where we get to know members of our Holmes Community a little bit better. John McCauley is the perfect subject for this back-to-school month, as he just stepped in to the role of Principal for the 2015-2016 school year. Where did you grow up? Oak Park, on north Columbian
Where did you live before you came to Holmes? Park Ridge, we still live there.
If you hadn't gone into education, what's another career you might have considered? For many years I planned on being a hotel general manager.
Can you tell us a bit about your family? My family tree stems from Oak Park and River Forest. My mother was a registered nurse and my father was a mechanical engineer. I'm the youngest of three. I'll celebrate 25 years with my wife, Leslie, in 2016. We have one child, Michael, who is in his senior year of high school.
What is something that makes you happy? Cooking for family and friends
What is the trait you frown upon in yourself? I frown upon laughing at my own jokes. (Working on that)
What is the trait you most frown upon in others? Selfishness
What do you consider a great personal achievement? Making a midlife career change to teaching (scary, but worth it)
What is something you treasure? Driving Michael to high school every morning and the memorable conversations
Do you have any pet peeves?Yes. When people ask, "Can I ask you a question?".
What was your favorite subject in high school? Biology
What is a hobby that you have that might (or might not) surprise people? I'm sometimes found playing classical and jazz piano in the Holmes auditorium after school hours.
What is one of your favorite journeys? Hiking through the jungle overlooking Hong Kong.
If you won a trip to anywhere in the world, where would you choose to go? Australia!
